Cats begin to move from adulthood to seniors at around 7 years of age. Just like people, cats change as they age. Many people notice things such as their cat sleeping more, having difficulty jumping or climbing stairs, changes in hair coat, and weight changes. With age your cat’s healthcare needs also change.

Some of the most common diseases we see in the aging cat are periodontal disease, kidney disease, diabetes mellitus, hyperthyroidism, arthritis, and cancer. At the Kentwood Cat Clinic and Cat Clinic North our laboratory tests help the doctors diagnose many of these common problems. Also, blood panels and urinalysis are very valuable in checking kidney and thyroid function as well as diabetes. Blood pressures and x-rays may also be needed in assessing the geriatric cat. It is definitely best to help prevent the age-associated problems by bringing your kitty in regularly for veterinary care. We see many cats living good lives well into their teens and early twenties and we love to help you keep your kitty healthy and happy for as long as possible.
