Parasite Control

At Kentwood Cat Clinic and Cat Clinic North, we know that household pets can carry parasites of one sort or another. Parasites may be external or internal. Fleas are the most common external parasites. Your cats can have fleas even if they are strictly indoor companions. We use a flea comb to check for fleas during every appointment. Other external parasites are mites and ticks. All of these can be treated and prevented with prescription medications.

In addition to checking for fleas, we recommend an annual internal parasite exam, or stool sample. This involves bringing in a stool/fecal sample so we can look under the microscope for eggs shed by intestinal worms. If we see eggs, we know that cat has internal parasites. However, if the parasites are not shedding eggs at that time, the cat may have an infestation without us being able to detect it and your pet may still need to be dewormed. There are different medications to kill or prevent internal parasites, depending on what your veterinarian recommends. Since the majority of kittens are born with internal parasites, we recommend that every kitten receive two doses of deworming medication. It is especially important since some internal parasites can be transmitted to humans. Our goal is to keep your kitty happy and healthy. Please call for more information.
