Physical Exam

A physical exam is the most important medical procedure your cat will receive . With a healthy adult cat, this may be performed annually, with a senior cat, every 6 months, and with a kitten every 2 to 4 weeks. A thorough examination by your veterinarian will evaluate the cat’s overall body condition and general health. Lack of symmetry of the face, body and muscles can indicate problems. The heart and lungs are evaluated with a stethoscope for rhythm and sound. The coat and skin are examined for parasites, lumps and hair loss. The abdomen is palpated (exam by hand/sense of touch) to provide an evaluation of organ structure and size. The mouth is examined for gum color, tooth presence and integrity, and any abnormalities. An overall exam is our first tool to evaluate the health.

At the time of the exam, the doctor will discuss any concerns you may have. Behavioral changes may be due to a medical problem. Lifestyle of the cat (indoor only vs. in/out,) will affect recommendations for care. Other animal residents in the house can have an impact on your cat’s health. Our goal is to formulate the best plan we can to ensure a long, happy, healthy life for your cat.
