Radioactive Iodine (131-I) Treatment of Hyperthyrodism in Cats

Our Kentwood Cat Clinic has affiliated with Cat’s Radioiodine Center to provide radioactive iodine (131I) treatment for all of West Michigan.  Hyperthyroidism is a common disorder in middle aged cats.  It is caused by a tumor developing in one or both thyroid glands.  Hyperthyroid cats usually lose weight, have increased appetites, develop high blood pressure, and often vomit or have diarrhea.  Left untreated, these cats typically die from congestive heart failure or stroke.  Although hyperthyroidism may be treated with medicine to control symptoms or surgery to remove the tumor, the best treatment for most cats is receiving a dose of radioactive iodine to destroy all the tumor cells.  97% of all cats treated with our radioactive iodine treatment are cured with one dose.  Side effects are uncommon, no anesthesia is required, and our patients can go home after a comfortable 5 days hospital stay in our special radiation ward.  We have the ability to treat up to 6 cats per week, and have had patients referred from as far south as South Bend, Indiana.  Please contact us if you have questions regarding radioactive iodine treatment for your cat.
